@Simon L'nu , they never meet. Suppose the collision point is at 0, and train A is at -10 km while train B is at +10. Both trains have to shorten the distance and arrive at either -5 km or +5 km, but before they get to this point, they have to reach -7.5 or +7.5, and before they reach that they have to reach -8.75 or +8.75, and so on halving the distance, i.e. they never move, and this explains why trains are always late.

I like Diabook also. I just find that there are a few glitches.. the Last Users images do not allow you to post on your profile when you click on thm, and The Connect Servics - will be great when we can choose what to allow on the page as default. (I can't set up twitter for example, so would be nice to have the option to not display twitter :)But it sure is a top line, pro looking theme!

Axel, dispy family is getting changed so fonts, and width/height of various ui elements are based on viewport size. simple to do, just use stuff like em and not px. the tricky part is getting them to be the same at different resolutions, or similar anyway.

Haven't actually tried Opera mail so can't compare. Thunderbird has suited me well over the years and I've never had a problem with it (providers yes, the software, never).

I use Thunderbird. Haven't tried Opera's. If only Eudora-Thunderbird flavor was continued, I'd use that.

tried Opera and I like it ... everything in one place ... but always had problems with the browser part, problem is that they have their own engine but nobody out there supports it, so I always had problems with some pages and keep coming back to Firefox

Did you check the message headers? Probably that's only someone sending mails with your address from a totally different server... Happens to me all the time (with older domain names & e-mail addresses).

When using your own domains chances are that hackers won't bother hacking your accounts because of the limited numbers (in relation to insertbigcompanyhere).

There is no subject in the message. I have to live.ca accounts through hotmail. My one live.ca address has been sending out spam to everyone on the contact list including my other live.ca account. In the 'to' field I see the whole list of all my contacts.

Yes, that's what I meant. The ways to obtain addresses are endless :( It could be forums or randomly chosing addresses. It could also be that s.o. who has you in his contact list had a virus in the past... There's a clever trick to distinguish between sources: Some mailproviders (don't know about Hotmail) allow you to use tags in your addresses. If your address is foo@example.com you could use foo+facebook.com@example.com if you register on facebook.com or foo+amazon.com@example.com if you register on Amazon. So if your address gets leaked in some way you know the source... But that's pretty much all you can do - the address listed in FROM can be freely chosen on misconfigured mailservers.

You should also scan your computer(s) for viruses. There are some worms which forward themselves via mails to all persons in an address book... exactly what you described.

When I'm mad because the last git pull broke my pod (again, sigh), I always have to remember that Diaspora is still alpha, not beta and especially not stable.

I hope Friendica and Pistos thought about this fact when they implemented the modules / forked the code...

They could have chosen not to release an "Alpha" code, especially if they foresaw drastic changes that will break "Alpha" come "Beta"

With the kind of attention they and their project is getting, it is easy to predict how many 'pods' will spawn until it reaches a point wherein it won't be easy to just do drastic changes without everybody else getting a negative reaction.

Point is, whether it is "Alpha" or not, if they are not satisfied with the code and they have plans for drastic changes in the code, they could have waited posting the code to the public until they reach "Beta" status.

Once the code is out, it's a different ball game, especially for a highly hyped project like theirs. No one can blame Pistos for forking or Friendica for federating, the code _is_ out.

Well, the others should have waited with forking the code or implementing modules and should not have used a clearly alpha-tagged code basis.

In my oppinion the guys had no other choice as to present an unstable code in order to satisfy the attention their project created in the first place. They had to keep the media satisfied in order to get further money...

But maybe you're right in this point: They should have better explained what alpha means to them. In the past we had too many different understandings of alpha/beta/stable (e.g. Gmail and its X-years-long beta, KDE4 and its very unstable early releases).

Diaspora is a wonderful idea, but it's being tarnished by the continual inability of the devs to say what they mean, and mean what they say.

I've been following their blog since before I joined (and I believe I've been on D for over a year now) and this sure isn't the tune they were playing in the beginning.
Truly, after Ilya, everything seemed to change.

Oh ok, I didn't know that. This changes the whole situation of course...

Marco - at one point an attempt was made to publish the Diaspora federation protocol - with Ilya's support and approval, by a guy named Ryan. This is in the Wiki.

I used this to start coding the Friendica connector. There were no warnings not to use it. I discovered in the process that nobody really knew how the protocol worked (Ilya included), as the documentation was completely wrong, and many mistakes were made in the implementation - though Ilya knew it better than anybody. It was also very incomplete and it took me another six months to reverse engineer what had been done and fill in the missing pieces. Ilya was encouraging, and many of the bugs I initially uncovered were rolled into a "federation" update.

I have no issue with Diaspora changing the protocol, as it still has some problems - but professional developers always try to keep their installed base happy and maintain backward compatibility. It is not hard to do, and I think foolish to disregard your current users - for a corporation that might be looking at how to pay the hosting bills.

The actions in this case makes me suspicious that federation with other services is not something the current core team desires. It is their project and they can run it any way they want, but as for the "alpha" argument - Friendica is younger than Diaspora with 0.5% of the funding and many less developers and has managed to produce a stable extensible communication platform which federates with most of the known internet and offers way more functionality - and which doesn't lose all your posts.

This last one is the most annoying because if I were on that project, making it *work* would seem to be much more important than playing with some new kind of presentation format. That is if I really cared about my customers.

Oh and it isn't the protocol that loses posts. Friendica has implemented the Diaspora protocol and the only time it loses posts is when it's connected to a Diaspora server. If we used it to communicate between Friendica nodes, I suspect we'd lose maybe one out of a thousand posts at most. It's the queue implementation that is buggy, although like I said the protocol does have issues.

So why doesn't this message loss issue come up on Bug Mondays? You would think it would be a glaring Priority Zero bug, where all development stops until it is fixed. But no.

The team recently released a "federation viewer" to explore what's happening at the protocol level. Now with all due respects I suspect this is because Ilya was the only one who sort of knew how it worked (besides me, having reverse engineered it) - and everybody else being visual technologists needed to see it in action to figure out what it was doing. Just a hunch. I know this because I've studied the code, and you can't tell what it's doing by looking at the code. You need to see it on the wire to understand it - which is exactly what I did.

A noble goal, but a full day might be tough, @Birch Wind . Half an hour of silence each day would be very nice too.

I've been an hour so far. lol... actually it's funny because the kids are being unusually quiet and well behaved. My other thought was that perhaps I would only speak in spanish. I don's speak spanish, so it would require me to use my little spanish helper book in order to speak, still bringing about the effect of 'chosing what to say carefully'

I'll have to test it out on something else.

That message has been through a lot. First it was converted from markdown to html and the embedding added, then the embedding was taken out and it was converted to bbcode - all this in PHP. Then it got converted to HTML and the embedding added (in javascript), then the embedding was taken out again and it was converted to bbcode in PHP. Then it was converted back to HTML and embedding added again and then takenb out again (javascript) and once more converted to bbcode in PHP. Then it was converted to HTML and the embedding added in PHP.

In one of those steps the embedding wasn't properly taken out. I'm not yet certain which one.

OK, that removes a few conversions. But I just confirmed that trying to reshare yours produced the same result. So we're not properly stripping out embeds during reshare (so we can embed them again).

It's by Harold Bloom and David Rosenberg. J stands for the J is the "name" for the author of Genesis, Exodus, & Numbers. Bloom posit's J was a woman/scholar in Solomon's court and posits what that might mean. Rosenberg restores a translation of the books closer to the poetry & vitality of the original Hebrew.

ahh! That's fascinating. I recall all the J, P etc talk from my EFM classes. I find it so hard to believe it could be a woman tho. I'll have to take a look.

His point is not that it WAS a woman, but that it could be, and if so, how would that change the texts.

It started me on the road of looking at texts from many viewpoints, realizing no one view would be correct, but that each filter would highlight something new.

The poetry was also quite beautiful, it restores a lot of the rhetorical power of the original Hebrew.

Even though entirely fictional I really enjoyed The Red Tent. I have always been fascinated with the Old Testament most specifically for whatever reason, but really all of it. Inlcluding the non-accepted texts. Imagining the audience each thing was written for, the community that the author was from. Really biblical stuff quite fascinates me.

okay, I see.. the whole thing is shifted over. If I click on my @friendicaaddress.com then the settings drop down, but not if I clock on the arrow. And notifications are all shifted over to the left also.

clear your cache, maybe help... i run dispy-dark, and they differ very little, especially with the javascript - they barely differ at all there (except where there's a theme or directory name involved).

I think @Keith Fernie does a pull each Friday, or perhaps it does it automatically, not sure.

i did some changes to that part several days ago, so maybe just a hiccup.

Well, fav themes are diabook, dispy and quattro/green (sp) but when I tried to chose quattro/green, it gave me duepuntozero..... though that is not a dispy issue, thats just an issue.

It's now a selectable option that's available in your Settings->Display Settings page if you have quattro as your theme. I haven't tried it, but that's the word from @Fabio Comuni

"quattro green" must be deleted - you can choose (black/green) when you take quattro.

It doesn't work for me though. I tried reg Quattro and then chose Green but it didn't change.
